On February 7th, we watched a video on Reddit. Reddit is a place to go to find out what is new and interesting online. The goals of Reddit is to let people be able to have an opinion online. The owners of Reddit believe that men write rude and degrading thing online and they want the comments to be vanished. People who are members of Reddit want to learn. Reddit offers live interview session. Experts also answer amateur questions which is great because most members really do want to learn. The website attracts people who want to know the truth.
Reddit also offers something like a pen pal service called Pizzagate. Pizzagate is where people are able to send pizza to random people all over the world who can’t afford their own meals. Reddit is a place where people can come together for a greater good. Reddit is not a community. A community is based off of similarities. The community on Reddit is a Subreddit. For example, the suicide prevention community. Bullying the bullies is their motto and it speaks very loud.
There is a quote that is very powerful in the article we had to read called, “Please Do Not Downvote Anyone Who’s Asked for Help”.
“The subreddit doesn’t exist because anyone thinks it’s a good idea to do suicide intervention here. It exists because there are people who only feel comfortable here. And they need to talk to somebody” (Hess, 2015).
This quote explains that lack of resources can lead to online communities. Acceptance, vulnerability and shared values are all words that describe this quote. The subreddit exists for people to get their voices heard since people feel alone. They will get help from teenagers or other experts. People receive positive thoughts to keep going in life. People who are experiencing similar things are also great sources to be experts.
We also had our first excused class, where we were required to take an online quiz for points. We all voted on the best Prezi’s we made during class the previous week. People who had more women in their groups were most likely rated higher. The secret to a more intelligent group in women. After seeing the results of the best Prezi, I will make sure I pick really good group members who actually read the online readings and really do care.

What you mentioned about Reddit is something I found very interesting as well! I think this social media platform offers more to its users then just photos being posted or 'status updates' which is awesome in this day and age. Because this site draws a lot of people in to read or use any of it basic functions, it also draws in 'trolls'. You mentioned that women are sexualized and men leave nasty comments on the site and the owners want it to stop. This is something that is a bit frustrating because I don't want to see a good website diminish because of those who don't even use the site. Great post and ideas, thank you!!
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI can relate to this blog post about Reddit. I have always heard of Reddit, but I was unfamiliar with what it entailed and why people used it. I was unaware of the "Pizzagate" on Reddit which we learned is a place where people are able to send others pizza no matter where they are on it world if the other can't afford it. I love how you shined light on that because it shows the positive outcomes of what Reddit has to offer!
