Today in class on Tuesday the 21st we played a fun jeopardy game where Daly asked us questions about the move assigned Code: Debugging the Gender Gap which was a film all about how women and girls in science talk about the lack of diversity and gender equality in the science and math industry. The film included girls and women discussing how they feel girls are shown as people in the science industry. Most of the younger girls said that they think men are more likely to be in the science profession. The documentary shows the difference of men and women in the engineering field as well and really went into the exploration of the gender gap. In the ending of the film it made me think about what society would want to obtain from having women and girls in the minority code.
In class today, we had a guest speaker. Her name is Amelia Marsh and she spoke all about Women is Computing—A Perennial Question. She is an honor student and Daly supervises her. She is graduating in May. Her research is all about education undergraduate and the gender gap. Amazon does great with gender. Most companies are male dominated and ethnic diversity is a problem. Mostly white people are taking important jobs. The Taulbee Survey reads the same exact thing that there is a huge gender gap. Uber has had issues with sexual assault. They don’t penalize men at all for sexual assault and don’t help women. Amelia is a great public speaker overall and I really enjoyed her presentation. I can’t wait for another presentation!
I also agree that the guest speaker today was really interesting and made great points when it came to discussing the movie, Debugging the Gender gap! I really enjoyed it and was glad that you did too. I think that with the advancements in feminist culture, having a balance in the coding industry really helps both men and women feel like they can work to their full potential and not think about being better or worse than someone else just by their gender.
