Blog #11

In class today on March 28th we talked about the following reading “Was Foucault a Plagiarist”. In this class we have been learning a lot about hashtagging and social media. On different types of social media like Instagram and Twitter it is so easy to Plagiarize other peoples opinions and thoughts. We also learned about open sourced software depends on licensing. Open sourced software is usually free software, licensed under GPL meaning it can be shared with others and has many benefits, and is very secure.

In this specific article, Mickey Hess argues that comparing academic citations and hip-hop sampling can significantly help students become better uses of sourcework. I think both types of plagiarizing are similar but different. When writing a paper or a blog in E-Society it is so important to use your own words or pair phrase. When writing songs or covers it is okay to plagiarize to make your own mashup or make a song sound better. Also, it is common when artists say a line from another singer.

I have started to think about the Unit 2 project and which social cause I feel most passionate about. I would love to talk about Abortion, Planned Parenthood Funding, or even Gay Marriage. Although these topics are controversial, I cannot wait for my video to be done to show my point.

Today in class on Tuesday the 21st we played a fun jeopardy game where Daly asked us questions about the move assigned Code: Debugging the Gender Gap which was a film all about how women and girls in science talk about the lack of diversity and gender equality in the science and math industry. The film included girls and women discussing how they feel girls are shown as people in the science industry. Most of the younger girls said that they think men are more likely to be in the science profession. The documentary shows the difference of men and women in the engineering field as well and really went into the exploration of the gender gap. In the ending of the film it made me think about what society would want to obtain from having women and girls in the minority code.

In class today, we had a guest speaker. Her name is Amelia Marsh and she spoke all about Women is Computing—A Perennial Question. She is an honor student and Daly supervises her. She is graduating in May. Her research is all about education undergraduate and the gender gap. Amazon does great with gender. Most companies are male dominated and ethnic diversity is a problem. Mostly white people are taking important jobs. The Taulbee Survey reads the same exact thing that there is a huge gender gap. Uber has had issues with sexual assault. They don’t penalize men at all for sexual assault and don’t help women. Amelia is a great public speaker overall and I really enjoyed her presentation. I can’t wait for another presentation!

This week we have a pretty easy week in class. Tuesday we had our midterm and Thursday, class is cancelled for Spring Break. We voted on Tuesday for the midterm. Last week we finished up our presentations and everyone did an amazing job. I was really impressed with everyone’s work ethic and research.

On Thursday, I loved the Free the Nipple presentation. The group was all girls which was very empowering and they all spoke equally which is important. They showed a video which included nudity, however it really helped portray the campaign. Men and women to this day are still not equal, and its 2017. Men are able to go topless, when women get physically and mentally hurt for showing their boobs/ nipple. The groups timeline was amazing. Filled with celebrities who feel strongly towards Free the Nipple. Kendall Jenner and Miley Cyrus are huge activist toward free the nipple. They have both posted Instagram pictures that have been taken down for nudity. However, men are able to post pictures like this. Their project made me think about dress code in middle school. I went to a public school and boys were able to have saggy pants, shirts with provocative women on it, and tank tops. Girls got “dress-coded” for showing their shoulders because shoulders are distracting. Boys were able to dress however they wanted with no consequences. I know that this rule was enforced at many schools not just mine. These actions show that men and women, boys and girls are not equal still to this day.
